Ather Energy has spent a decade selling electric scooters on software. Connected dashboards, over-the-air updates, ride analytics, a maps app on the handlebar — the pitch was always that you were buying a computer that happened to have wheels.
On 29 August 2026 it launched the Konarc at ₹99,999 ex-showroom — and to hit that number it took the computer out.
The cheapest Konarc has no 4G modem, no GPS, no over-the-air updates and no connected app features at all. It is the first Ather in years that cannot phone home. That decision is a far better lesson in how cheap EVs actually get made than any battery-technology headline you'll read this year.

What ₹99,999 Actually Buys
Line the three launch variants up against each other and the entry model isn't just a smaller battery. It's a different category of machine.

Look at the bottom three rows. The base Konarc loses the connectivity hardware, and with it every software feature Ather is known for: no find-my-scooter, no tow-and-theft alerts, no remote charging status, no ride history, no OTA updates. The screen shrinks from seven inches to 4.2. The front disc becomes a drum.
The battery shrank too, obviously. But a 0.6 kWh cell difference is not what separates ₹99,999 from the next rung up.
Why Deleting the Modem Is the Real Cost Move
Here's the part worth understanding, and it applies to any connected product anywhere in the world.
A 4G modem costs a manufacturer a few dollars. That's not why it gets deleted. What gets deleted along with it is a recurring cost: a cellular data plan for every vehicle, for years; servers to receive the telemetry; an OTA pipeline to build, test and ship updates to a fleet that must never be bricked; and a support burden when any of it misbehaves.
A connected scooter is not a one-time bill of materials. It's a subscription the manufacturer pays on your behalf for the life of the vehicle — and on a ₹99,999 machine, there is no margin to fund it.
So the entry Konarc is honest about what it is: a very good dumb scooter. Metal body, steel unibody chassis, IP67 motor, 31-litre boot, reverse assist, a closed silent gearbox. All the mechanical content, none of the cloud.
That's the pattern to watch globally. The first wave of EVs in every category arrives loaded with connected features, because early adopters pay for them. The second wave — the one that actually reaches volume — arrives with those features stripped out of the base trim and sold back as an upgrade. Ather has just run that play in public, in a single product line, on day one.

The Range Number Ather Doesn't Hide
Now for something Ather deserves genuine credit for, and where much of the industry looks bad by comparison.
Every electric vehicle sold anywhere is certified on a test cycle — IDC in India, WLTP in Europe, EPA in the US — and every one of those cycles flatters the vehicle. Gentle acceleration, mild speeds, no headwind, no hills, one rider. You will not see the certified number in daily use, and manufacturers know it.
Ather publishes both. Alongside the IDC figure it prints a TrueRange number, its own estimate of what you'll really get.

Run the ratios and the discipline shows: 80 ÷ 100 = 80%. 100 ÷ 125 = 80%. 130 ÷ 161 = 80.7%. Ather is applying a consistent ~20% haircut to its own marketing number, across the whole range.
That 80% figure is the number to carry with you. Whatever certified range any manufacturer quotes you, on any continent, multiply by 0.8 before you decide whether it fits your commute. Ather has simply done the multiplication for you and printed the result.
The Efficiency Barely Moves — and That's the Point
Divide range by battery across the three variants: 100 km from 2.1 kWh, 125 from 2.7, 161 from 3.5. That's 47.6, 46.3 and 46.0 km per kWh. Essentially flat.
That tells you these are the same scooter with different-sized tanks — no efficiency trickery in the bigger variants, no penalty for the smaller one. Which makes the running-cost maths beautifully simple.
The entry Konarc uses about 26 Wh per kilometre (2.1 kWh ÷ 80 km of real range) — call it 2.6 units of electricity per 100 km. Multiply that by whatever your own tariff is, because domestic rates in India run anywhere from roughly ₹3 to ₹12 a unit depending on your state and slab: at ₹8 a unit, 100 km costs about ₹21; at ₹5, about ₹13.
Ride 40 km a day, every day, and you will use roughly 380 units a year — about ₹3,000 at ₹8 a unit. That is the entire running-cost argument, and it is a number you can check against your own bill rather than take on trust.
That's the number that sells a scooter like this — not the top speed, not the screen size. And notice it's identical whether or not your scooter has a modem.
The Catch Worth Reading Twice
Ather's own product page leads with "10 Years Battery Warranty." That is true, and it is also the top of a four-step ladder.

What ships with the scooter is 3 years / 30,000 km. AtherStack Pro lifts it to 5 years / 60,000 km. Two further extensions take it to 8 years / 80,000 km and finally 10 years / 100,000 km.
Charging follows the same tiered logic. Every Konarc ships with a 450 W charger that takes 4 hours to reach 80% on the entry model. Ather sells a second 450 W unit that runs alongside it, and the combined 900 W setup does the same job in 2 hours — a clean halving, exactly as the physics predicts. On the two larger variants that add-on is included; on the ₹99,999 model it isn't.
What to Take Away
- Cheap EVs get cheap by subtraction, not breakthrough. The gap between the entry Konarc and the next trim is mostly connectivity, brakes and screen — not cells. When you see a surprising price, look for what was removed before you look for what was invented.
- Deleting a modem removes a recurring cost, not a one-off one. Data plans, servers and OTA pipelines are paid for the life of every vehicle. That's why connectivity is the first thing to go at the bottom of a range.
- Multiply any certified range by 0.8. IDC, WLTP or EPA — the test cycle always flatters. Ather's own TrueRange figures land at 80% of its certified numbers with striking consistency.
- 2.6 units of electricity per 100 km is the number to remember. At ₹8 a unit that is about ₹21 per 100 km, or roughly ₹3,000 a year for a 40 km daily commute — but plug in your own tariff, since Indian domestic rates span ₹3 to ₹12 a unit.
- Check which rung an advertised warranty sits on. "10 years" here means the fourth tier; the scooter ships with three.
